Robert's Story

I never met my great uncle but I have always had a photograph of him in uniform alongside his young wife, Ada. I didn't know much about him but, since researching family history, I found that he joined up on 14th November 1914 into the new Ashton Battalion, a PALS battalion of the Manchester Regiment. He was billeted in Southport Lancashire in December 1914 when he heard of the death of his wife from enteric fever, only 12 months after they married. Robert was wounded in the eye at Gallipolli in 1915 and in August 1915 he was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and Star.
