James's Story

A Durham miner, who survived the war.

James was the son of John and Charlotte Harvey of Crook, County Durham. He enlisted in the Tyneside Irish 2nd Battalion on 9th January 1915. On the 18th June 1916, he was wounded in a trench raid on the Somme and was repatriated to England and spent some time in hospital, before being sent back to France. He was wounded again in March 1917. He was finally discharged from the army on 17th October 1918. He was the brother of Francis, killed at Passchendaele, and nephew of James Benedict Harvey, Michael Matthew Harvey and John Cross, who all lost their lives in the war.
