John's Story

I never knew my grandfather but he was a career soldier who came out of 'retirement' as a reserve major at the beginning of WW1. I believe that much to his disgust he was deemed too old, he was 44 at the outbreak of war, to be sent to the front line so spent the majority of the war training recruits for the Hampshire Regiment on the Isle of Wight.

His only son William, a 2nd Lieut. in the 1st Batt. Devonshire also served and died in the war.
