Walter John's Story
I am sorry to say I have no special memory of Walter Hucker. He was my great-uncle (my paternal grandfather's older brother). I only heard about him from my family. He died long before I was born (23 years before, in fact). However, some years ago, my husband and I made a pilgramage to France, to find his grave, which was at Varennes Military Cemetary. As I understand it, Walter died of wounds sustained in the Battle of the Somme. He was taken to a Casualty Clearing Station and died there some time later. He was Private G/61924 in "A" Company, 23d Batallion of the Royal Fusiliers. Earlier in the War he was in the East Surreys. He left behind a wife and son, both of whom I vaguely remember from my childhood, as they occasionally visited my parents. They lived in Finchley, North London. There are no descendants, as the son never married. I think that is about all I know! My family and I often wonder why our Uncle Walter joined up, as he was already 38 years old when the War started, and had his wife and son to think about. By the time he died he was 41.
