John's Story

Lance corporal John William Grocott 12143, my uncle, was killed by a sniper's bullet while with the Canadian troops on 16 October 1916. He was 24 years old.

He was killed by a sniper's bullet while with the Canadian troops.

About 30 years ago I was on a coach trip in Europe. On the way home out of Paris and heading for Dunkirk, the coach pulled up at a war cemetery. Three Canadian ladies got out and went into the cemetery while we waited in the coach. Apparently their brother was buried there. I said to my husband that I had an uncle buried somewhere in France and when I returned to England I must ask my mother where it was. Well, we had sat outside the very cemetery that my uncle was buried in, with the Canadians; so near and yet so far.
