Albert Frederick (Fred)'s Story
Fred signed on at just 16 years of age saying he was 19 years old.
He was small and slight and must have looked like a schoolboy but he was accepted into The East Surrey Regt. and at a later date was sent to The Somme. After January 1917 he was transferred to The King's Own Scottish Borderers - maybe because his battalion was wiped out or maybe because he had been wounded and on return to the battlefront was assigned to the KOSB.
On the morning of Sunday March 24th over 50 men were killed and Fred was amongst them. His body was never found and his name is etched on the memorial at Pozieres. How proud his parents must have been that a lad so young had lasted almost to the end of the war and had been so brave to volunteer right at the beginning of the war.
