Walter G's Story
Walter was born in 1891 in London he joined the Grenadier Guards in 1910 at the age of 18yrs, he was transferred to the reserve on 8th July 1913(3 years engagement) and was mobilized on 5th August 1914. He first went to france in 1914 and was back and forth until he finally came home in Feb 1919.
He was wounded twice, on the 6th Nov 1914 he was wounded in the shoulder, and on the 1st July 1916 he was wounded in head,
Walter was awarded the Mons Star, the victory and the British War Medals and was transferred to the reserve in April 1919, He was mobilized again in April 1922 (for the General Strike) and discharged to the reserve in July 1922, Walter was finally discharged from the reserve on the 28th March 1927.
Walter died on the 18th May 1936, he had a militery furneral.
My grandmother met and married Walter in 1918 she was already a war widow and had four young children,Grandma and grandad had another 8 children and he was a loving caring persons and treated all the children as his own.
He will never be forgotten, a very brave man, a hero.
