George Sidney's Story
In memory of my Great Uncle Sidney. Died age 23 while on active service off the Belgian Coast on 15th October 1918. He was drowned at La Panne, off the north-east coast of France whilst engaged on a coastal motorboat which was designed to thwart the aims of enemy submarines. Something went amiss with the craft & all five crew were lost, though at the time of my great-grandparents receiving news of the death, one of the bodies had not been recovered. The letter from F.C. Hanson LRN. CO. CMBS said; "He is buried in Coxyde Cemetry, Belgium, which lies about two miles this side of Nieuport, where the enemy trench lines used to run into the sea upto about three days ago". "This is of course an exceptionally risky job, but your son had always been only too ready to take the risk, and he was very keen on this work".
