William's Story
William Brooks 1874-1922. My grandfather, William, lied about his age to sign up in 1899 as a young bandsman with the 1st Battalion the Royal West Kent Regiment. He served up to 1902 and in 1903 joined the Militia Battalion until 1907. He served in the Boer War and India where he received a wound at Dum Dum (I still have the bullet). In 1914 he re-joined the Labour Corp and served in Ypres at Hill 60 and was discharged in 1918. His daughters tell of his coffin on a gun carriage to the cemetery. Unusual for a private and iIcan find no evidence of it actually happening.
Brian Brooks (grandson) AAE MIMI.
