William's Story
He served on the western front until the end of the war.
My grandfather was William Purdie who joined up on 28 September 1914 in Glasgow, at the age of 26 years. He was posted to the RFA where he qualified as a driver (lead horseman in the troop) and served on the western front until the end of the war and his discharge in 29 November 1919. During the war he suffered from shrapnel wounds to the legs, lung damage due to gas, and a permanent injury to his right hand after being kicked by a mule, which was being used to haul guns and munitions to the front.
