Gordon Stewart's Story
My Grandfather was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment at the start of the 1914 war. He was transferred on receiving a commision in the 3rd Batalion The Gloucester Regiment serving in France.
From watchmaker to war hero
He was summoned to Buckingham Palace in 1918 to receive his Military Cross. The citation recalling how the enemy had gained a footing in the post of which Lieut Le Brun was in charge. He shot two with his revolver before organising a party to drive off the remainder with a bayonet attack.
In July 1918, he married Caroline a nurse in Bristol where he lived and worked as a watch repairer until 1925.
The family moved to Bournemouth and then to Lymington in 1939.
He worked at Wellworthy's as a chargehand until 1969 when he retired at the age of 71.
He was a respected member of the British Legion and the Buffs.
He had five sons and two daughters, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
