Alfred Edward's Story
Alfred Henstock died 3rd September 1916, at the battle of the Somme, He is buried in Row D grave No. 4 Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, France.
His unit were on the way to the front line at nightfall, to support the attacking troops, a shell burst near to them, killed Alfred Henstock and two other colleagues plus injuring several others.
The letter home to his mother (from Capt. Royd Truscon) finishes with the statement;
" Your son died a Soldier's death fighting the great battle for the country he had come forward to serve in her hour of need"
His brother Leonard Henstock died as a P.O.W in November 1918
