In his last letter home dated April 11th 1918 he wrote "nearly all my Company either wounded or taken prisoner there are only a few of the old ones left". He was killed 5 days later on April 16th aged 37. He had written to his brother Private Arthur Tye on April 8th 1918 "well old boy I am glad to say I am bright at present had a bit of excitement one time but got through safe and was lucky at that"...."well old boy I am like you fed up with the whole thing, if it wasnt for Bess and the children I should wish I was somewhere out of it but I think I shall trust to luck now I have had so much of it". Sadly his luck ran out eight days later.
