Charles's Story
Charles Sanford was born in 1890 in Newcastle to Charles (an engine fitter) and Caroline Sanford. He married Elizabeth Bamborough in 1912 and had three children-Charles,Tommy and Florence (who was only 3 when he died).
He joined the 16th Battalion of the northumberland fusiliers formed by the Pals of the Newcastle and Gateshead Chamber of Commerce ib September 1914.His Battalion merged with the 16th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers which was all part of the 96th Brigade which Landed in Boulogne France on 22 November 1915.
He lost his life on 10th July 1917 during a German attack on Nieuport and is buried at The Military Cemetery at Coxyde, Belgium.
Never known but fondly remembered.
