Herbert Alban's Story
My Mother, Sarah, told me that Herbert took her into Liverpool city on the tram after he was demobilised because of a deep schrapnel injury to his thigh. She was thrilled at him buying her a red balloon. Unfortunately as they returned home Sarah let go of the balloon as she got off the tram, it floated off and she cried bitterly not only for her loss but there wasn't any evidence that her Dad had bought it for her. She was comforted to some extent by her beloved Dad telling her that the setting sun was her balloon and every time she saw it she could tell her brothers and sister that it was her balloon they could see.
