John's Story
On Monday 31st July 1917, the first day of the third battle of Ypres, John Pender and Frederick Hanna were repairing telephone cables when John was sniped in the shoulder. As he fell Wee Hanna went to his aid and was himself sniped falling dead on top of John. Eventually John managed to find his way back to his lines and was sent back to Blighty till his wound healed. He was then sent to Salonika to join the 2nd Batt Cameron highlanders.
Other memories
The picture shows Pender(tall) Hanna (wee) and Ernest Geyer (seated). Travelling photographers were not,it seems, all that uncommon.
