Ernest's Story
Private Ernest Yeomanson No. 4877, 1/4th Battallion Leicestershire Regiment. Renumbered No. 20057 for service with B. E. F. 1/4th Battalion was part of the Lincoln and Leicestershire Brigade with the North Midland Division. This became the 138th Brigade, 46th (North Midland) Division.
Ernest was possibly wounded during an attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt where the Battilion along with the 1/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment took heavy casualties. He was recovering from his wounds at Auxiliary Hospital, Loversal Hall, Doncaster, when he was photographed in a group on the 29th May 1916.
The date of his return to France is not known, but he was drafted into the 2nd Battilion South Staffordshire Regiment, with the number 40419. Ernest was mortally wounded by gunshot on May 8th 1918, his 21st birthday and died in Casualty Clearing Station No. 3, at Gezaincourt France, on 9th May 1918. He is buried in Bagneax Britsh Cemetery, Gezaincourt, Plot 1 Grave G. 15. R. I P.
