Charlie's Story

My grandfather joined the Royal Engineers Exeter in December 1915 aged 32. At the time he had 4 daughters and a son. His son (my father) was only 3 months old when he joined up.He served in France and was hit by a shell in the face in May 1917. He was sent to the 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, France. His nose was shot off.

He was discharged from service in December 1917 being no longer fit for war service. After returning he had another daughter and worked on the Great Western Railway. He lived to be 88.
