Walter's Story
My Great Uncle Walter was one of a family of 12 (nine boys and three girls). They were children of a tenant farmer. The oldest boy stayed at home to help his elderly father on the farm. My grandfather, David Edward Wilson, worked as an engineer on the early submarines at Dalmuir, Clydebank and the other seven boys went off to fight in France.
They all came back- some gassed, some with shrapnel wounds. Some fought at Loos and some on the Somme. They were incredibly lucky. I have never heard of such a family of survivors.
Walter was in the Seaforths; Joe was in the veterinary corps, Henry in the Royal Scots and Robert in the Tank Corps. The other three - James, Thomas and George - I don't know much about as they didn't have surviving children.
I'm trying to research the others, but Wilson is such a common name. They obviously enlisted separately so they wouldn't be in the same regiments.
