Samuel George's Story
Samuel George Hawes, Private 3476, Suffolk Regiment, entered France on 27 October 1915. He was killed in action on 17th January 1916. He was buried at Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference 28.
This is not in the walled section of war graves. He was my late grandmother's boyfriend. Seventy years after his death I visited his grave. I picked a rose that was growing on it, pressed and mounted it, and presented it to my grandmother who was very touched.
After the war she married his younger brother who did survive army service. The portrait of Sammy Hawes which formerly was displayed in my grandparents' home now hangs in mine along with his death penny. The whereabouts of his medals is not known.
