James's Story

James Hendry signed up in 1916 he worked at the iron works at Dalmellington -- He died in 1917 shortly after arriving in Belgium. He left a widow with 7 children - one of them was my grandmother Mary - she would have been 10 when he died. His name is commemorated on the Menim Gate. There is also a memorial at Waterside near Dalry - although his name is written as James Hendrie. He is the soldier on the left.
