James's Story
James Woolley was the illigitimate son of Sarah Jane Woolley and George Walker. He was born at Fenton-Stoke on Trent but was living in Castleford, West Yorkshire when he enlisted in 1914 in the 4th battalion Grenadier Guards.
He saw frontline service in France and Flanders from 14th August 1915 until he was killed in action during the battle of the Somme on the 25th September 1916.
His body was never identified so he is named on the magnificent memorial at Thiepval. He was 20 years old. His Medals are now a family heirloom. His relatives have visited the area of the battlefield many times.
