John's Story
John William Galleymore was my grandmother's brother. She was 8 years old when he died and 6 years old the last time she saw him. John William had a son, Charlie, the same age as his sister Margaret. She remembers her brother sitting her and Charlie on his knees before he went off to war.
John William was a sapper with the Corps of Royal Engineers, formerly Manchester Regiment (253rd Tunnelling COY). He was in France and Flanders and was killed in action on 10th January 1916. He does not have a grave, but his name is on the Loos Memorial in the Dud Corner Cemetery near Loos-en-Gohelle in France.
This year we visited the cemetery and paid our respects on behalf of all our family to him and all those who paid the ultimate price for us in WW1. We will never forget.
His son Charlie married and in turn had a son. John William's mother Louisa was devastated by the loss of her son.
