Oliver Charles's Story

On 11 November 1918 Great Uncle Ollie recorded the following in his diary

"Woke up cold at 7 o'clock this morning and we are sweating on the top line as what will happen today. Hurrah! How can I describe our feelings? About 7.30 three of our boys went down to the next relay for rations and came back with the news that the A.D.S was shifting up and also the rumour that HOSTILITIES WOULD CEASE AT 11 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING and that great cheering could be heard. We nearly went mad with delight. About 8 o'clock an 89th officer and some of the boys came along and confirmed the news. Hu-bloomin-ray! We cheer and sing yet don't get so excited as I imagined we would as it is impossible to realise it yet and besides we have no rations yet and are develishly hungry and have got to march on without hope of any breakfast."
