Private Harry's Story
The father of Gertrude Harris, Private Harry Farr of the 1st Battalion The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), was executed for cowardice on 18 October 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Gertrude and relatives of other men shot for cowardice and desertion fought for many years to obtain pardons for them. Gertrude finally achieved her goal in August 2006 at the age of 93. In all, 346 British and Commonwealth servicemen were executed during the First World War, 37 of them for murder.
