Henry George's Story

Henry George Hedges was born in Wyck Rissington, Gloucestershire in 1881. He was the eldest son of William & Sarah Hedges. In 1913 he married Mabel Amy Holloway & in 1915 they had a daughter Jessie Edith Hedges.

Henry enlisted in the army on 11 December 1915 at the age of 34 at that time he was a head gardener in Weybridge, Surrey.

In August 1916 he was posted overseas as part of the B.E.F.

In September 1917 he was gassed and returned to England for hospital treatment in Sheffield and Shoreham by Sea.

On the 18 December 1917 he returned to 5th Battalion The Buffs. By February 1918 he was with 6th battalion the Buffs, however by the 3rd March 1918 he was with the 7th battalion.

On the 23 March 1918 he was reported missing in action, he was taken prisoner and was taken to the POW camp at Stendal, Germany.

On the 29 June 1918 Henry died of pneumonia at the POW hostipal Stendal, Germany.

Henry George Hedges was one of three brothers killed in the first world war.
