Cebert's Story
Cebert was a Trooper with the Queens Own Worcestershire Hussars, which was a Yeomanry Regiment. Although born in Worcester, he was resident in Dymock, Gloucestershire during the War. He was invalided out from Gallipoli with severe dysentry and returned to active service in Palestine in 1917. He was part of a mounted machine-gun unit, armed with the Hotchkiss machine-gun. Early in the Second Battle of Gaza, he was hit by a Turkish bullet. At first, he thought his side had been shot away by a piece of shrapnel but, as he colourfully described, the bullet played a tune on his ribs before coming to rest too close to his heart for safe removal. This piece of metal was part of him for the rest of his life.
