Ernest Geoffrey's Story
Ernest was a 16 year old midshipman serving on the cruiser HMS Formidable when it was hit by a torpedo from a German submarine off Start Point, Devonshire. There was a loss of over 500 men.
Ernest is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent.
His eldest brother served in the army and was killed 3 years later. His mother was my paternal grandmotherÂ’s sister. She must have been devastated to lose her son at such a tender age.
