David John's Story
Uncle Dai was my grandfather's brother, but also he married my father's sister, so he was not only my great uncle but also my uncle!
David John Evans married Ethel Maud Holcombe on August 7th, 1918 and spent just one week together before he went off to fight for his country. He died three months later on 5th November, just one week before Armistice was signed.
In 2006 my husband and I had the opportunity to go to the Cemetery at Caudry in France where my Uncle Dai is buried after losing his life in Cambrai. It was a beautiful resting place in a delightful village setting and although we never met my Uncle, my husband and I were very moved to see where he had been laid to rest.
My Aunty Ethel never remarried and died on 13th November 1987 at the age of 92 - true to Uncle Dai all her life and they are now finally reunited in death.
Uncle Dai will never be forgotten
