Edward's Story
Edward Macdonald was my paternal grandfather's brother.
Edward had joined the army as a regular and was part of the Old Contemptibles who arrived on the Marne early in the war in 1914. His name is on the war memorial; in La Ferte sous Jarre on the Marne. The memorial is beside a roundabout in the busy market town and details of all those listed can be viewed in the town hall. I have no memories of this great-uncle and although I had heard mention that he had died in the war, we had no details.
By contrast, in the case of my other great-uncle (elsewhere on The Wall), I have lots of snippets of information handed down from his sisters, my much-loved great aunts and my grandmother too, of course. I guess the menfolk in my family are more reticent about these things than the womenfolk.
