George's Story
Able Seaman George Beattie (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) was a casualty of WW1 having died age 17 on board HMS Viknor on 13 January 1915. The armed merchant cruiser HMS Viknor disappeared off Tory Island, Ireland. Not one of the almost three hundred on board survived. Some of the bodies of the crew washed up on Irish soil over the course of several days.
In 1914 the vessel was converted into an armed merchant cruiser and renamed HMS Viknor. The Viknor was assigned to the 10th cruiser squadron and was used to patrol the waters between Scotland and Iceland.
George was the third of four children. His older and only brother, Private Thomas Boswell Beattie (The Kings, Liverpool Regiment, 20th Btn) died age 21 on the 10 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme which had begun 1 July 1916 only 9 days prior to his death. Thomas' name is inscribed on the Memorial to the Dead at Thiepval, France.
