John Francis's Story
He fought all through the First World War at the Somme, Ypres and other places. He was wounded three times but would rarely talk about of any of the events, and the more you read of those events, the more you understand why.
As a young child I can remember my mother and grandmother talking about knitting. My grandmother pointed to my grandfather and said "there is the best knitter in this house" and he replied "the only thing I can knit are socks" which at the time I thought was very funny. I learned later that the reason he could only knit socks was to replace those that rotted on his feet in the trenches.
I remember my grandfather as a very quiet family man, well organised,a nd caring for family/friends.
