James's Story

James was the youngest of six children to Henry and Christina Hill. He worked as a coal miner in Gateshead before volunteering in 1915, when he was 19 years old. He was at first in the North Staffs Regiment before being transferred to 15th btn. Cheshire Regiment. He died in France, in March 1918 from a gunshot wound to the chest, age 22. He is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery.
