Frank William's Story
My dad, an infantry man, was cuptured by the Germans during the trench warfare at St Quentin in about 1916 and spent the rest of the war in a prison camp somewhere in France. He told me that life in the camps wasn't too bad and apparently made friends with Fritz, one of the guards. Then on armistice day the prison camp gates were opened and the prisoners sent out without any support or guidance. They walked back across France and were at times reduced to cooking rats and mice to survive on the journey.
Once back in England he flatly refused ever to cross The Channel again.
