Benjamin's Story

Our Uncle Ben belonged to the 1st/5th London Rifle Brigade. He died of wounds on 20th June 1918 aged 19yrs. He is buried in the Caberet-Rouge British Cemetery in Souchez. He came from a large family and was much mourned. Grandfather used to go over to France to visit his grave by cargo ship as in those days there was no other way. We have been to the Cabaret-Rouge to visit his grave several times. He was the son of Kate and Sunny Dawes of Prittlewell, Essex. His name is on the war memorial in Priory Park, also at Wells-next-the Sea in Norfolk where he spent several years living with his Grandmother. Although we didn't know him he will always be remembered.

Sweetest of Memories is all that is left of a Loving Son (this is inscription on his gravestone)
