John's Story
My grandfather and his four brothers all fought in the 1st world war. I think all in France and all returned home safely at the end of the war, I think this would be quite a rare event.
There was a local newspaper report about them with a photograph of each. I have mislaid the cutting but hope to look it up in the archives of the paper.
John Matthewson was batman to Colonel Collingwood. He sent my grandfather a Christmas card and a cheque every year until my grandfather died.
He also was a motor cycle dispatch rider and at one time was gassed which left him with a very harsh cough. My daughter and I have 14 embroidered cards sent at this time to my grandmother and my Mum.
He was a very loving and gentle man respected and loved by all who knew him.
