Arthur's Story
Arthur Shaw was my maternal grandfather who lied about his age to join up in 1916. He fought in Mesopotamia in an artillery battery. He only ever told me one story directly connected to the war. When the war had ended and they were sailing back home they decided that they had all had enough of war and fighting and they heaved the guns over the side and into the sea. I will never know if this was true but I think it has a simple relevance which I recall every Armistice Day.
