Alfred's Story

My grandfather died in the 1st World War and left behind a wife and six children. As a result of the above, his wife, my grandmother Lottie Barnett nee Millward had a mental breakdown and was taken to Cheddleton Asylum on the 16th October 1917 aged 35 years.

Her six children were taken by train from Leek Railway Station to Shrub Hill Station in Worcester to be fostered out. My father Daniel was amongst the siblings and sent to a very religious woman who treated him harshly. He later joined the Territorial Army and was drafted into the 2nd World War. Part of his service was spent in Dunkirk.
