Wilfred T's Story
Wilfred was my Grand Mothers brother and a much loved and missed brother.
He enlisted into the 6th Bn Somerset Light Infantry and was promoted to LCpl and saw some horrendous action in the Somme.
On 15th July 1916 the South African Brigade was given the task of capturing Delville Woods suffering heavy casualties. On the 25th August 1916 the Light Division captured the remainder of the wood and pushed the Germans back.
It was during this action that he performed a courageous act and was subsequently awarded the Military Medal for his bravery (although no citation is available).
If was later commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the 8th Bn Somerset Light Infantry and was killed in action.
He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord).
