Robert's Story
I never knew you, Great Uncle Robert, and I can only imagine. Imagine a young country lad born and bred in the same small village as myself in Hayton near Aspatria, Cumbria. Image going to war, into the unknown. Imagine the horrors you must have faced. Imagine the sorrow you felt when you heard your 23 year old brother died at Ypres in 1916. Imagine your pain and anguish when mortally wounded also in Ypres a year later.
Unknown Great Uncle
While I can only imagine, you suffered the reality of fighting in a war so that we could have a better life. We will always be grateful. Robert was the first of three brothers to die in the First World War. George died 24.6.1916 age 23 and Joseph died 28.11.18 age 27.
