Her father's death meant her life went down a different path than the one it would have done if the Great War hadn't happened.

I grew up listening to my Nana (Eva) tell us of how her dad had died in World War I and after that, how she and her brothers George and Charlie were separated from their mother. Her father's death obviously meant her life went down a different path than the one it would have done if the Great War hadn't happened. She shared this with countless children across Europe and the rest of the world. She never really knew what had happened to him, only knowing that he'd died in France. When I started to look for him I wasn't even sure of his name, but after a lot of detective work, I found him. I wasn't able to do it when my Nana was alive, but I've found him now and like my Nana, I'm incredibly proud of him. Hopefully, next year I'll be able to visit his grave and finally lay some flowers there on behalf of his little girl, Eva Mary Thompson, was very proud of her Dad.
