George David's Story
My grandfather died before I was born but my mother's description of who he was and what he did is vivid. He was a lead rider of the field guns in the Royal Artillery. He was one of the Old Contemtables having been a regular soldier prior o WW1.
He was at the Somme and many other actions. He developed Rhumatic fever while in the trenches and as a consequence was not on the front line for a while.
He was left with a weak heart because of the rhumatic fever and went to Preston Barracks. It was there he met my grandma who was a war widow herself with a daughter. Her was discharged in 1919.
During WW2, despite his weak heart, he was in Liverpool helping with the bombed houses and getting trapped people out.
This did not help his lungs and heart and he suffered ill health until his death in 1951.
WW1 robbed my grandfather of his health and and mentally scared him for life. It robbed me of a loving grandad. He went on to have seven children and left us with a lovely extended family.
