Stewart Clifford Beverley's Story
Stewart was my Grandmother's brother. He was the 10th of 12 children born to Frederick Beverley Baker and his wife Eliza Annie (nee Marshall). The family were originally from Wonersh in Surrey but had moved to Havant in about 1886 where Frederick worked as a Leather Grounder.
On joining up Stewart was sent to Somme region where he served as a Private in the 22nd Bn, Hampshire Regiment.
He died (probably at the Number 21 Casualty Clearing Station in La Neuville) on 11 February 1917. He is buried along with 185 other Commonwealth soldiers in the La Neuville Communal Cemetery in Corbie, where the graves line one wall of a pretty public cemetery.
