John Alfred's Story
A Brave Man - One of Many.
Grandad was promoted through the ranks to Serjeant Major leading men taking supplies of ammunition to the front and featured in major battles at Ypres and the Somme. Although he was never seriously wounded the mental scars lasted his lifetime. He used to have a nightmare about killing a gernman soldier which disturbed him so much he had to sleep in a bedroom by himself so as not to disturb my grandma. After his death we discovered his war diary which detailed as far as possible each treacherous journey to the front and the men he lost along the way as well as the atrocious loss of life on Hill 60.
