Alfred James Abel's Story
My Grand dad was an Old Contemptible. He had been in the army before the war and he volunteered again in 1914 at the outbreak of hostilities. In 1915 he was sent to Suvla Bay in the Dardanelles and fought in Egypt and Palestine.
He was de-mobbed in July 1919. He won the 19-14 Star, General Sevices and Victory Medals which my cousin still has and wears with pride every year at the Remembrance Services.
Grand dad was married to Florence Ellen Henwood and went on with her to have many children. He died in 1958 just before I was born so I never got to meet him or see him but my dad talked about him sometimes and my dad joined the Royal West Kents too and served in the Second World War.
