John's Story
On 1st September 1917, 2nd Lieutenant John BC Madge and 2nd Lieutenant Walter Kember of 6 Squadron were flying over France in an RE8 aircraft and were shot down by Baron Manfred Von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron. John was captured and served time as a POW before returning to the UK.
JBC Madge was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the 1914-1919 Victory Medal and the 1914-1920 War Medal. After the war he returned to the studies the war had interupted and in July 1923 he qualified as a doctor (M.B, Ch.B) through the Univiversity of Edinburgh living at various UK locations. He died in Lincolnshire in 1957.
