Charles's Story
Three brothers remembered
Charles, my grampa, joined up on September 4th 1914 at Newport Athletic Club with his two brothers, Ivor and Will (who was underage at the time). After training, they were dispatched to the Western Front, and later to Salonika. Miraculously, all three brothers returned home - but their companions were not so lucky. Of the 100 men who joined up on the same occasion, only six came back. None of the brothers ever spoke about the war except to tell light hearted anecdotes, such as all the chaps clubbing toether to buy Will a football for his 18th birthday, and an incident in Salonika involving the consumption of unripe figs. Like all soldiers, they kept the worst from their loved ones.
