Joseph's Story
My father was at Ypres, Mons and Salonica having joined up right at the start of the war. At Mons, his unit was ordered to hold a ridge, which they did but at great cost. Those left alive were known as the Mons Heros.
Dad was wounded three times, once given up for dead but, thankfully survived. (or I would not be here to write this).
One of his wounds was schrapnel, a piece so small it remained in his body, moving around his blood stream. On 22nd September 1967 he died of a massive heart attack and at the ortopsy, it was discovered that the small piece of schrapnel had slowly built up into a clot blocking his heart's main artery.
His death was due directly attributable to his wound although it took all those years to complete its task.
