George's Story

I recall his photograph, in regimental uniform, black watch tartan kilt etc with his pipes by his side, looking handsome and serious. It hung in pride of place in my granny's "best" room, and alongside it, a framed scroll of honour with outline icon on it which I thought was a picture of God when I was very young.

There was a "box of delights." I was given to look at on occasion, containing photographs of Geordie and postcards with pretty lace attachments embroidered with flags and flowers. I am so glad I grew up knowing about him and was the first person ever from his family to visit his grave in Guemappe Cemetery near Arras in Northern France in 2000.

We visited again two months ago. A very special place! We stayed on a caravan site only four miles from Guemappe Cemetery and now I know what it feels like to be there.

A much loved, much missed brother to my Grandmother and his ten other siblings.
