Samuel's Story
Samuel joined the army on the 2 November 1916 he was 18 years old and5 feet 6 inches tall and posted to the 16th Cheshire regiment (the bantam) on 23 January 1917
From 11th march to 18th march samuel had scabies.
On 22nd October 1917 at 5 .30 am the advance started the rolling barrage at 100yards in eight minutes, the whole ground was one mass of shell holes.even at this slow pace the troops had the greatest difficulty in keeping up with the barrage when they reached the objectives . they began the day long struggle dealing with unconquered pill boxes, concrete machine gun posts by the end of the day the 16 th Cheshire had lost 9 officers killed and 327 men killed wounded or missing
Samuel has no known grave , his name is on the Tyne cot memorial. he was 19 years old
